Faculty Positions

Physics Tenure-Track Position

Applications are invited for a tenure-track assistant professor position that starts August 2016 to replace a retiring faculty member. A commitment to teaching of undergraduate non-majors and physics majors is essential. A Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field is required. Hillsdale College, is a private, well-endowed, co-educational, liberal arts school of 1450 students. It is located on a 200-acre site in a beautiful, small Michigan town. The Physics Department is well equipped and has 19,000 sq. ft. of floor space. Salary is competitive with similar schools.

Philosophy Position

Hillsdale College invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of assistant professor of Philosophy beginning August 2016. This is a five-year position with the possibility of becoming tenure-track. AOS 20th Century Analytic, specific area open. AOC History of Philosophy. The 3/3 teaching load will include two sections of the core class covering the history of the Western Philosophical Tradition from the Pre-Socratics to the present. Classical Education Tenure-Track Position

The Education Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in Classical Education. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline—such as Philosophy, Philosophy of Education, History, Literature, or Classics—at the time of appointment and should possess a firm understanding of the classical liberal arts (trivium and quadrivium) and classical K-12 education. They should have the desire to teach a variety of courses that will include Logic and Rhetoric in Classical Education (EDU 393) and may include Classical Quadrivium (EDU 301), Philosophy of Education (EDU 360) and other offerings in Classical Education. Candidates should also provide evidence of a willingness and ability to assist in managing the growing responsibilities of the Education Department, including preparing Hillsdale College students for teaching positions in classical K-12 schools and offering continuing education for K-12 teachers and administrators.

Biochemistry Tenure-Track Position

The Chemistry Department at Hillsdale College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Biochemistry. The position starts August 2016 and requires enthusiastic commitment to teaching and research at the undergraduate level. Hillsdale has a thriving, collegial, ACS-approved department with six full-time Ph.D. faculty (expanding to seven) and outstanding students and facilities. Each year we graduate 15-25 majors in chemistry and biochemistry. Because of steady growth in our biochemistry major, we seek a dynamic colleague to join in teaching courses and guiding undergraduate research in biochemistry. The new faculty member will also likely share in teaching either general chemistry or liberal arts core chemistry for non-science majors. Research area is open within the broad field of biochemistry and must be suitable for undergraduate participation.

Mathematics Tenure-Track Position

Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in mathematics or applied mathematics at the assistant professor level beginning in August 2016. 

Candidates for this position are required to have a Ph. D. in mathematics by the time of appointment and to be willing to teach various undergraduate mathematics courses.

Staff Positions

Assistant Director for Barney Charter School Initiative (English)

The Assistant Director must possess excellent communication skills in order to effectively discuss Hillsdale College and the Barney Charter School Initiative to individuals across the country. The Assistant Director must have an understanding of the mission of Hillsdale College and its philosophy, as well as educational practices and philosophies of the Initiative. Experience in K-12 literature, grammar, and composition instruction is necessary to the successful execution of the duties.

Duties include: review draft charter applications and prepare feedback; prepare curriculum materials; participate in special event design and planning; develop relationships with prospective school founding groups and manage their journey toward school opening and into operation; advise teachers on principles of instructional excellence; and other related duties as assigned.

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) and three years’ teaching experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the job.

Part-Time Operations Coordinator for Barney Charter School Initiative

The Operations Coordinator must possess excellent organizational and communication skills in order to effectively support Hillsdale College and the Barney Charter School Initiative in various administrative capacities. Candidate must have an understanding of the mission of Hillsdale College and its philosophy, as well as basic administrative, logistical, and clerical practices.

Duties include: working five hours per day, organize and support office operations with administrative expertise; prepare and manage administrative and logistical details of special events; serve as operations focal point during special events; other duties as assigned.

This position requires a high school diploma (Bachelor’s degree preferred) and five years’ administrative experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the job.

Part-Time Dow Center Hotel Guest Services Team Member

Work times will be based on occupancy with different work schedules each week (includes some weekends and must be flexible to work all shifts). Hours will vary depending on occupancy and need. Person will share in cleaning guest rooms, meeting rooms, public areas, and restrooms as well as conference room set-ups, laundry, and front desk operations.

Part-Time Cook

This part-time position requires meal planning, grocery shopping, and preparing lunch and dinner four days a week during the school year for approximately 35 people. Must have ability to work well with the house director in coordinating meals and events. Required qualifications include a high school diploma and two years’ experience in complete meal preparation; or an equivalent combination of education and training sufficient to perform the job.
