Hillsdale College Career Services is guided by two principles drawn from our governing documents. First, your career exploration process must be an exercise of your self-government, and second, it must be operated within the context of the liberal arts education.
For the first guiding principle, look to the Honor Code:
A Hillsdale College student is honorable in conduct, honest in word and deed, dutiful in study and service and respectful of the rights of others. Through education the student rises to self-government.
These virtues must inform your process of career exploration. While the Career Services team is committed to helping you rise to self-government, your efforts are the hinge of the entire endeavor. If you fail to take advantage of the opportunities presented, there is very little that we can do to help.
Secondly, you must remember that “getting a job” is not the most important thing you are undertaking here. The Career Services mission statement makes the relationship clear:
By virtue of a liberal arts education, Hillsdale College prepares students to lead others and to excel in every calling. The Career Services Office encourages and assists students in fulfilling their vocations, so that, leavened by their education, the students better serve their neighbors, their nation, and God.
We view our role as supplementary to the endeavor of education that is the character of Hillsdale College. At some point in the future, you will no longer be a student of Hillsdale. What shall you do then? The role of Career Services is to remind the student that they must occasionally look out to that horizon and contemplate the life to which they are called.
