Washington-Hillsdale Internship Program
Applying to WHIP
“WHIP was one of my primary reasons for choosing Hillsdale. It offered an entirely new perspective on politics. Most importantly, it introduced me to acquaintances who became colleagues and mentors who have remained life-long friends.” —Nathaniel Stewart, ’96
WHIP is open to Hillsdale students of all majors. Undergraduates can apply for WHIP for the Fall or Spring academic semesters, and/or for the Summer program. Students are not allowed to participate in WHIP during their freshman year, however they may apply as freshmen for their sophomore year. Please note that all WHIP students must have completed Politics 101, “The U.S. Constitution,” prior to leaving for D.C.
Application requirements include the submission of a résumé, Hillsdale College transcript, one letter of recommendation from a Hillsdale College faculty member, and statements describing the student’s internship interests and the strengths that qualify the student for the program.
An on-campus orientation session is conducted each semester prior to a student’s time in Washington, and an additional D.C. orientation occurs upon arrival to the capital. Upon completion of the program, WHIP students write a summary statement of their experience in Washington.
