The R. Joy Stewart Scholarship Fund awards partial tuition scholarships for incoming freshmen ranging from $500 to $2500. Donald Stewart established the fund in honor of his sister, R. Joy Stewart, who served as director of the art department for 35 years. Additional scholarships are available from the Dworski, Fink, or Brooke Funds. To receive a scholarship, a student must major or minor in art. The art department will renew the scholarship award automatically each subsequent year provided the student continues to perform excellently in art classes. To apply, please submit the following:
Portfolio: This should be a CD with digital images representing 12-20 of the student’s best pieces of artwork from his or her high school years. The department accepts both two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces. In addition to the digital portfolio, professors suggest that a student schedule a campus visit and personal portfolio review during which an art professor may review the student’s artwork in its physical form.
Personal Statement: A brief write-up that answers the following questions:
What art courses have you taken?
What artistic medium do you prefer?
Who are some of your favorite artists?
What artistic projects have you pursued outside of school?
Letter of Recommendation: This should be from an adult who can comment on the student’s artistic abilities and dedication, for example, a teacher, parent, artist-acquaintance, etc.
Deadline for Submission: March 1st
Note: Submitted CDs will be kept by the art department. Decisions of awards are usually made by May 1st. Students who receive scholarship offers from the department will be notified by the Office of Financial Aid.
