Astronomy Club
Hillsdale College
The Astronomy Club brings together students, faculty, staff, and community members after that boring period called “daytime” is over to enjoy the heavens together! We offer public telescope events, both periodic and for special celestial occurrences. Field trips and outreach events are offered throughout the year. We also observe stars called pulsars with the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, using the Radio Telescope Remote Command Center (RTRCC) in SSC116. The RTRCC work can be done for course credit or as a student job.
The goal of the Astronomy Club is to foster an appreciation of astronomy as a natural science within the College’s liberal arts community.
The club is open to all students who are eager to investigate the wonder and beauty of the universe and meets regularly for campus-wide star-gazing parties using the College’s large binoculars and telescopes.
Activities
The group has traveled to Chicago’s Adler Planetarium and Michigan State University’s Abrams Planetarium as well as enjoyed the Saturday morning physics lectures at the University of Michigan. Each semester, the club plans outreach projects with local schools, scout troops, and camps and uses a Star Lab inflatable planetarium to bring the night sky indoors.
